Deryck Anderson from Sydney developed a mobile application for the Australian PKU Community.

The application, which is available for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad users is also available and free from the iTunes App Store.

Dylan, Deryck’s son has PKU and as a member of the NSW PKU Association, he thought developing the application would be constructive way of contributing in a meaningful way to the management of the PKU diet.

This app is an easy to use tool that allows you to count protein in your diet. It follows the Green (go foods), Orange (counted) and Red (stop) foods analogy that you learn about from your PKU clinic team.

 The application features:

  • What are Green, Orange and Red foods

  • What food additives are OK

  • A reference database of counted foods

  • Option to insert your own counted items into the database, and

  • A built-in calculator to quickly work out food portions sizes using the food label.

“The calculator function is a great tool. We only have to enter the amount of protein per 100g, how much protein we have left and it tells us exactly how much we need to weigh out without having to work it out on my calculator. So much easier.”

Deryck welcomes any ideas or suggestions surrounding this application.
