If you have an idea for a fundraising event, the Association will support you in bringing that idea to fruition. We love new ideas! Either attend a committee meeting (which are always open for all to attend - not just committe members) or send your idea to a member of the committee and they will add it to the agenda of the next meeting.

Awareness Wristbands

Colourful silocone wristbands sporting the 'Diet for Life' message are sold by the Association to raise awareness. At only $4 (or $4.60 including postage within Australia if purchased online), these are a great way to show your support. Why not purchase 20 or even 50 of these to sell to family and friends?

Be Sun Smart This Summer

SLIP SLOP SLAP on some Cancer Council Sunscreen.
We are selling various types of Cancer Council sunscreen to assist in raising funds for the PKU Association of NSW. Simply browse the catalogue then fill in the order form and send back by Monday 17th January to be sun smart this summer.

Wine Drive

We all have our children’s health and well being at the forefront of our minds especially when our beloved are affected by Phenylketonuria. The PKU Association of NSW are undertaking a wine fundraiser to raise money for the up and coming PKU Youth Camp scheduled for October 2012.

The four wines that are recommended have been sourced by an independent cellar to ensure quality and value for money. With this being said we also aim to have a turn-around time of approximately one week from the time of payment to delivery/pickup of the wines.

Following are the wine tasting notes for each of the wines on offer as well as an order form which will need to be filled in and sent to pkunsw@gmail.com along with payment via paypal or direct deposit.

Wine Tasting Notes

2009 Sauvignon Blanc Semillon
Intense aromas of passion fruit, gooseberries, fresh lemon and pineapple intermingled with a hint of musk, fresh peas and meadow hay. The palate is crisp and clean, full of passionfruit, freshly cut pineapple, lemon grass with a nice racy acid keeping the finish crisp and dry. The blend of 75% sauvignon blanc and 25% semillon reflects the growing popularity of sauvignon blanc as the dominant variety.

2010 Pinot Grigio
This lovely pinot grigio was produced from fruit of the highest quality. Pale straw in colour, this wine displays clean and fragrant grassy aromas of pear and apple fruits. A soft richly textured finish combine to make an ideal food wine.

2010 Cabernet Sauvignon
The aroma is dominated by the dark fruits of black currents, plums and black cherries with a toasted chocolate menthol background. Fresh violets add freshness to the rich and complex aroma. The palate is full and rich with the dark fruits filling your mouth with flavour. The wine has many layers of flavour, constantly evolving in your mouth long after the liquid has gone. Soft tannins provide great support to the intense fruit flavours of this wine.

2010 Shiraz
This shiraz is a great example of how Margaret River can create wonderfully elegant shiraz. A super concentrated wine with aromas of blackcurrants, liquorice, chocolate, star anise, white pepper, bay leaves, tobacco, and some savoury cedar oak. The palate has a wonderful core of ripe dark fruits which form the length and complexity of this wine. Soft tannins and a long finish complete this wine. A blend of 6% mourvedre adds some savoury spice and complexity to this shiraz. This wine will continue to evolve over the next 5-10 years.

Past Events

Gala Dinner - Thank you for your support

On 25 June, The PKU Association of NSW hosted another successful evening at Angelo’s on the Bay, Cabarita. It was a great night with 130 PKU family and friends attending to raise money for PKU Research at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. Gladys Ho, Research Assistant provided an informative update on the PKU Research. Without the generous donations from our sponsors, and the generosity of those who attended on the evening, we would not have been able to raise $18,000 for PKU research. A special thank you to Angelo’s on the Bay for their generosity and for making our Gala Dinner a night to remember. The logos of our sponsors have been included in this newsletter and, whenever possible, we would encourage supporting these businesses within our community. We would like to thank all the PKU families who attended on the night and assisted in sourcing prizes for our raffle and auction items.

Below are the results of the fundraisers held this year with the amounts raised for the PKU Association of NSW.

The PKU Association recently made a donation to the CHW PKU Research for $34,000. Monies were raised from the PKU Awareness Day Labcoat walk $11,000, Gala Dinner $18,000 and various individual fundraisers and donations.

This was the second payment made this calendar year to the CHW Research, with the first cheque for $40,000 made back in May of this year.
